AFL-CIO

AFL-CIO is a voluntary federation working to improve economic conditions for its members on the job and in the public square through a strong presence that elevates workers’ voices. Healthcare is one of the most important issues facing workers in America today, and AFL-CIO has aggressively engaged on the issue.

AFL-CIO brings a critical perspective to the National Priorities Partnership—that of the typical American working family. Similarly, the National Priorities and Goals align well with AFL-CIO’s work to provide high-quality and equitable care to all.

“Closing the disparities gap is a vital issue in healthcare and must be addressed immediately,” said Gerald Shea, AFL-CIO’s Assistant to the President for Government Affairs. “The National Priorities Partnership touches on the key issues that ensure every worker in America receives affordable, equitable, high-quality care.”

As part of the organization’s larger healthcare initiative, AFL-CIO unions are coordinating a one million-member healthcare mobilization effort that is working with a broad alliance of grassroots organizations to win progressive reform and give millions more union members the information and tools they need to become informed. The effort includes surveying Americans about their healthcare experiences. Last year's survey garnered nearly 30,000 responses and more than 7,500 personal stories.

AFL-CIO’s overarching healthcare goal is to secure high-quality healthcare for all. Leaders are working to achieve this by mobilizing and educating members on the issue, building key alliances with businesses and progressive groups, and making the 2008 elections a mandate on healthcare reform.
