Physician Consortium for Performance Improvement convened by the American Medical Association

The Physician Consortium for Performance Improvement (PCPI) convened by the American Medical Association is working to enhance quality care and patient safety through the development, testing and maintenance of evidence-based clinical performance measures and measurement resources.

“As we work to improve the overall quality of healthcare delivered, we are committed to developing quality measures that positively impact patient outcomes,” said PCPI Chair Bernard M. Rosof, M.D. “To support the National Priorities Partnership, the PCPI will develop measures in areas that the NPP has identified as priorities, such as care coordination, patient safety, and overuse.”

The PCPI occupies a unique position in healthcare. Formed more than ten years ago with the vision of improving patient care, the PCPI includes representation by all of the specialties of medicine. Its primary mission is to provide physicians, other healthcare professionals, and healthcare organizations with information to guide and support quality improvement. This information includes evidence-based measurement, which can be designed to support two paths to improvement. One pathway provides feedback to clinicians and organizations so they can focus efforts to change clinical practices and assess the impact of those efforts. A second pathway motivates healthcare organizations, physicians, and other healthcare professionals by giving consumers, payers, and purchasers the information they need to make informed choices.

The PCPI has developed more than 260 measures on 42 topics to help improve the care delivered to patients.  These measures are actionable targets that address areas of underuse, overuse and intermediate outcomes and enable physicians and other healthcare professionals to track variations in care.  Many of these measures are endorsed by the National Quality Forum.
